Why We Started This Blog (The Real Reason)

There’s no shortage of content out there about community development. Academic white papers. Federal reports. LinkedIn thought leadership that sounds impressive but tells you nothing actionable.What we kept noticing was the gap between the theory and the reality of doing this work — in real places, with real constraints, real politics, and real people who’ve been let down before and need a reason to believe again.This blog exists to live in that gap.Renee and Sarah here. Between us, we’ve spent decades in the trenches of economic development, grant writing, strategic planning, workforce strategy, and small business coaching. We’ve worked with rural communities that had been written off. We’ve helped nonprofits go from scrambling to sustainable. We’ve sat in planning meetings that felt hopeless and watched them turn into something real.We’re not going to talk at you about best practices in the abstract. We’re going to share what we’ve actually seen work — and just as importantly, what we’ve watched fail, and why.

In every place we’ve worked, there were assets being overlooked, leaders who hadn’t been asked, ideas that hadn’t found funding, and people who wanted to help but didn’t know how to plug in.The work — the real work — is about surfacing that potential and building the conditions for it to grow.That’s what this blog is about.
